What happened

The second edition of the Sekhon IAF Marathon featured three categories – a 21‑km run for serious runners, a 10‑km run for beginners and a 5‑km fun run. More than 3,500 participants registered. Kumar entered the 10‑km category, finished the distance and was awarded a medal.

What the reports add

News18 noted that another runner from Uttarakhand completed the same 10‑km distance in 39 minutes, describing his long‑term involvement in marathons since 2015. The outlet also highlighted that the marathon is held in memory of Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, the sole Indian Air Force Param Vir Chakra recipient.

What was said

"I serve in the Haryana Police and have been involved in sports for 30 years. I took up athletics in 2007," Kumar told the agency. He added, "I also trained for mountaineering and successfully scaled Mount Everest in 2011; the Haryana Police has honoured me greatly for this." He further said, "I continue my training alongside my official duties, balancing work with family responsibilities, including caring for my child as a single parent." The Uttarakhand participant said, "I have come from Uttarakhand. I participated in the 10‑kilometre run and finished it in 39 minutes. I feel really good here. Thank you so much to the organisers and to all my team members who motivated me."
