Amanda Burrows seeks BC NDP nomination in Vancouver‑Strathcona

Burrows, a social‑justice advocate and First United Church executive director, aims to fill the seat left vacant by Joan Phillip’s death.

Former Vancouver mayoral hopeful Amanda Burrows has entered the race for the BC NDP nomination in the Vancouver‑Strathcona riding, the constituency of the late MLA Joan Phillip, who died in August.

Burrows, a renter and executive director of the First United Church in the Downtown Eastside, previously ran for mayor and lost to OneCity candidate William Azaroff earlier this year. She now promises city‑run grocery stores, a home‑retrofit program and expanded harm‑reduction services for the riding.

Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, Joan Phillip’s widower, endorsed Burrows, saying she is a champion for social, economic and environmental justice. The BC NDP highlighted her work on renter protections, a living wage and action on homelessness and the overdose crisis. Burrows said, “Vancouver‑Strathcona is my home, and for more than a decade I’ve worked alongside renters, workers, families and people living in poverty across this community.”
