Keith Wilson, co‑chair of the pro‑independence group Let Alberta Decide, told supporters at a rally outside the Alberta legislature on Saturday that the separatist movement has already won, regardless of the outcome of Monday’s vote on whether to begin a legal process toward a future independence referendum.
Wilson said the campaign has convinced "hundreds of thousands of Albertans" that separation is legally possible and has forced a broader debate over the province’s grievances with Ottawa. He stopped short of conceding defeat but prepared supporters for a possible loss, noting the movement’s success in making independence a major political issue.
The rally also featured American UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland, who praised the 2022 Canadian trucker convoy as an inspiration for Americans defending their right to protest. Wilson rejected former premier Jason Kenney’s suggestion that separatists abandon their cause if they fail to win a majority on Monday, asserting the group will "build on our successes, build on our relationships."
Prime Minister Mark Carney has warned that even starting the process could bring years of economic uncertainty, while Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who called the vote, cited a poll showing only 22% support for separation. Madison Holmes, a 23‑year‑old supporter from Calgary, said the pandemic and vaccine mandates drew her into politics and fueled her opposition to Carney and former prime minister Justin Trudeau.
