US stock markets dropped sharply on October 15, 2026, after a consumer‑price index report showed inflation rising to 3.7% year‑on‑year, above the 3.6% forecast. The S&P 500 fell 1.1%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.3% (171 points), and the Nasdaq Composite lost 1.6%.
Data from the CME Group indicated that traders now see a 39% probability the Federal Reserve will raise its benchmark rate at the next meeting in two weeks, up from 22% a day earlier. The 10‑year Treasury yield rose to 5.23% and briefly topped 5.32% before retreating toward its highest level since 2002.
Australian market futures pointed to a 0.4% opening decline for the ASX 200, and the index was down 0.6% at the close on Wednesday. The Australian dollar weakened to US$0.6966.
"The consumer price index was a little hotter than expected, but not scorching hot," said Brian Jacobsen, chief economic strategist at Annex Wealth Management, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald. "It was just hot enough to keep traders on edge."
Higher fuel prices, driven by the ongoing war with Iran, lifted Brent crude to $106.71 a barrel, adding about 1% to the price on Wednesday. The bond market’s reaction reflected concerns that persistent inflation could force the Fed to continue tightening, which would raise borrowing costs and dampen economic activity.
Analysts noted that despite the inflation spike, consumer spending remains resilient, keeping price pressures elevated as businesses pass higher costs onto buyers.
