The U.S. Navy’s aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is scheduled to dock in San Diego on Thursday afternoon, ending a deployment that lasted nearly a year and included sustained operations against Iran.

The ship left San Diego in November, was redirected to the Middle East after the United States and Israel began their war with Iran in late February, and remained in the region until late August when the USS George Washington relieved it. During the stretch, the Lincoln’s crew of roughly 5,000 faced reported shortages of food, water and supplies, plumbing failures, and rising mental‑health concerns. Two attempts by sailors to jump overboard were reported, prompting criticism from Democratic lawmakers.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed the reports as “completely misrepresented,” while former President Donald Trump, when asked if the deployment had been too long, replied, “Not nearly long enough,” a comment that angered some naval families. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao later acknowledged that eight service members had attempted suicide during the deployment, including two overboard attempts while the carrier was in combat.
