The U.S. State Department announced Tuesday that more than 300,000 visas have been revoked since President Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025, part of an intensified immigration crackdown.
State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott told reporters the figure includes over 100,000 cancellations in less than a year, a pace he described as "faster than any administration in history." He said the government has "zero tolerance for foreigners here on visas who break the law, commit fraud, or undermine our national security."
The latest update follows an August 10 report that 175,000 visas had been cancelled since Trump returned to office. The administration has also expanded social‑media screening of visa applicants and increased fees for certain work visas.
Critics, including civil‑rights groups, argue the policy undermines due process and targets ethnic minorities. They cite controversial revocations of visas for foreign nationals who took part in pro‑Palestinian demonstrations in Gaza and for individuals who posted comments about the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Trump has defended the measures as essential for domestic security, while opponents warn of racial profiling and a hostile environment for immigrant communities, such as Somali Americans in Minnesota.
