HMRC data released during pension awareness week shows that almost seven million people in the United Kingdom have never checked their state pension forecast, with those aged 45 to 54 most likely to be unaware, the Independent reported.
The government highlighted that a full state pension will exceed the £13,000 annual threshold next year for the first time because of the triple‑lock guarantee. HMRC estimates that one in eight adults have never used the online forecast tool, available on the gov.uk website or the HMRC app. The most common reasons cited were the perception that retirement is too far away (26%) and concerns about losing track of previous workplace pensions (24%). Around 9.5% said they did not know how to check their forecast.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s chief customer officer, told the Independent, “It’s never too early, or too late, to check your state pension forecast. Checking your forecast on the HMRC app takes just a few minutes but can make a real difference to how prepared you feel for the future.”
George Sweeney, a personal‑finance expert at Finder, added that starting with the app or website is “one of the simplest” tools for retirement planning.
