Flag Day, instituted by Sheikh Mohammed on December 11, 2012, commemorates the accession of the nation’s second president, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and has been celebrated annually since 2013. The day also marks the start of National Month, a series of events that run until the UAE’s National Day on December 2.

In a message released on Tuesday, the ruler described the flag as "high, proud, noble, and fluttering in the sky of our country" and urged widespread participation across public spaces.
