Trump pitches cash payments and fuel relief as midterm costs loom
The president unveiled a suite of cash‑relief measures as new polls show growing voter disapproval of his handling of inflation and living costs.

President Donald Trump announced a series of financial‑relief proposals on Monday as the 2026 midterm elections near, while a recent NBC News Decision Desk poll indicated a sharp rise in voter disapproval of his handling of inflation and the cost of living.
The plan includes $90 monthly payments to seniors to offset Medicare premiums, a $500 refund for Affordable Care Act enrollees, and a pledge to issue $5,000 checks to millions of Americans if Republicans keep control of both the House and Senate. In addition, the administration launched an $8 billion Harvest Fuel Relief Programme through the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help farmers cope with higher diesel prices and production costs.
According to the poll released on Sunday, 58 % of respondents strongly disapproved of Trump’s handling of inflation and living costs, up from 44 % in April. Overall disapproval rose to 73 % when combining strong and moderate critics, while overall approval fell to 27 % from 40 % over the same period.
The proposals target groups the administration says are most affected by rising expenses, including older Americans and agricultural producers. However, the poll data suggest that the cash‑payment promises have not yet shifted public sentiment, leaving the president and Republican lawmakers facing a “political challenge” to defend their narrow majorities in Congress.
