Trackside fire near Clapham Junction disrupts London Victoria services

A blaze on the tracks outside Clapham Junction forced a halt to Southern and Gatwick Express trains into London Victoria, with commuters urged to allow extra travel time.

A trackside fire broke out on Sunday near Clapham Junction, damaging signalling equipment and forcing a halt to Southern and Gatwick Express services into London Victoria. National Rail said the disruption would last until at least midday, with an "extremely reduced" service operating in and out of the station.

Passengers reported conflicting announcements on the morning of Monday, with some hearing two different service updates. National Rail warned commuters to allow an extra 60 minutes for journeys and to seek alternative routes, including other Southern and Thameslink services and London Underground lines.

Thameslink trains between Streatham and Tulse Hill were running at reduced speeds due to a signalling fault, and the disruption was expected to affect only northbound routes between those stations. The fire was seen on footage of firefighters hosing down the damaged signalling equipment and tracks.

Services most affected include those between London Victoria and Ore, Littlehampton, Epsom Downs, London Bridge, Dorking, Brighton, Clapham Junction and Watford Junction, as well as Gatwick Express services to Gatwick Airport.
