Three weeks after the season‑finale cliffhanger of Ryan Murphy’s FX series The Shards, the network has not announced whether the show will return for a second season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

What happened

The series debuted in early August and concluded its first season with an unresolved storyline. Despite the lack of an official renewal, the outlet notes that Disney‑owned FX has historically taken time to decide on continuations, citing recent pickups of Adults and The Lowdown months after their first‑season ends.

What the reports add

The article points out that FX’s renewal pattern for anthology series differs from ongoing dramas; for example, two years passed between the last season of American Horror Story and its next, while Feud waited nearly seven years between seasons. Murphy’s partnership with FX is described as flexible, with the studio ready to back projects when he presents ideas.

What was said

Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter that he feels a personal connection to the 1981‑set story, noting, “That was the year I turned 16… I really understood those kids, and particularly, the Bret character.”

How it came about

Murphy and author Bret Easton Ellis adapted Ellis’s semi‑autobiographical novel about Los Angeles prep‑school students. Linear ratings averaged about 237,000 viewers, while streaming numbers remain undisclosed, a typical situation for FX titles.
