Sydney Trains adds stops and frequency, lengthening trips on T4 and South Coast lines
New timetable from Nov 15 adds stops and a dedicated express track, boosting frequency while extending travel times on key lines.

From 5:00 am on 15 November 2026, Sydney Trains will roll out a timetable overhaul that adds three new stops and a dedicated express track on the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line and the South Coast line, increasing service frequency but lengthening some journeys.
What happened
The changes affect the T4, T8 Airport and South Coast lines, which together carry about 250,000 passengers a day. On the T4, city‑bound services will run every four minutes from Sutherland and every three minutes from Hurstville during the morning peak, up from five minutes and 3½ minutes respectively. The T8 Airport line will also see a frequency boost. All South Coast trains will terminate at Central Station and stop at Sydenham, allowing transfers to driverless metro services.
What the reports add
The SMH article notes that the greatest increase in trip time will be up to 14 minutes for passengers travelling between Waterfall and the city centre, caused by the three new stops at Sydenham, St Peters and Erskineville. Journey times to the city will rise by about 12 minutes in the morning peak and about 14 minutes in the evening peak for Waterfall, Heathcote, Engadine and Loftus stations. For Cronulla‑to‑city trips, extra stops add three to six minutes, while existing express services from Cronulla remain.
What was said
Oscar Colman, quoted in the SMH piece, advises South Coast passengers heading to Sydney Airport from Wollongong to travel to Central and then double‑back on the T8 line to avoid two transfers. Steven Siewert notes that South Coast commuters will see an increase from three to four trains per hour during peak periods.
How it came about
The timetable shake‑up is designed to detangle the T4 and South Coast lines between Arncliffe and Central by giving each its own “dedicated express track”. The move aims to reduce bottlenecks and boost overall capacity, while the added stops connect the T4 line to the driverless M1 metro at Sydenham.
