Jaejoon Jang, a Korean‑born artist who completed his MFA at MICA in 2019, founded Subtitled NYC, an artist‑run gallery in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, to provide studio space and cover exhibition costs for emerging creators, Observer reported.
What happened
Subtitled NYC opened four years ago after Jang calculated that sharing studio space and inviting other creatives would offset his rent and material expenses. The gallery’s current exhibition, "Sky Blue," runs through Oct. 25, 2026 and features works by Louis Block, Spencer Finch, Byron Kim and Motohiro Takeda.
What the reports add
The Observer notes that Jang had no formal curatorial training and that early shows were modest, consisting of small paintings and sculptures placed without a specific ambition. He observed that many young New York artists are required to pay delivery, application and material fees to exhibit, which he now covers himself. He says the name "Subtitled" arose when he labeled a project folder during research and felt it resonated with his immigrant experience.
What was said
"The pandemic happened, and I had this unexpected pause for one or two years during which I couldn’t really start my career as an artist in a serious way," Jang told Observer.
"I also just wanted to introduce the artists I really liked to the people around me," he added.
"The more shows I did, the more I wanted to give the artists freedom," Jang said, explaining his decision to cover artists’ costs.
How it came about
Jang’s motivation stemmed from a pandemic‑induced career pause and the high cost of studio rent in New York. By inviting other creators to share space, he could meet his own financial needs while offering a platform for work that galleries and museums often overlook. The gallery’s mission, as Jang describes, is to support artists as a form of investment in the exhibition itself.
