Spain moves to ban evictions after 87‑year‑old's removal sparks protests

The coalition agreed to a suite of measures, including a ban on evictions, amid protests in Madrid over the eviction of an 87‑year‑old tenant.

Spain’s coalition government announced plans to ban evictions until 2030 following nationwide outrage over the forced removal of 87‑year‑old Maricarmen Abascal from her Madrid home, Independent reported.

Hundreds of demonstrators camped in a major Madrid square on Tuesday, demanding rent freezes and automatic lease renewals, while Health Minister Mónica García said the Socialists and junior partner Sumar had reached an agreement on new housing measures.

The proposals will be split into two decrees for a parliamentary vote on Friday, with most measures in the first decree and the automatic contract‑renewal clause in the second, according to García and Social Affairs Minister Pablo Bustinduy.

Junts parliamentary spokesperson Miriam Nogueras said the party still seeks protections for small landlords, and the lawyer for Abascal said the fund UrbaGestión had offered a preliminary agreement that could let her return if she pays 30% of her pension over eight years.
