Republican Sen. Darline Graham and Democratic challenger Annie Andrews faced off Sunday night in their first, and possibly only, televised debate for South Carolina’s 2026 Senate race, NBC News reported. The debate, hosted by South Carolina ETV in Columbia, covered the Iran war, artificial‑intelligence data centers, President Donald Trump’s “one big, beautiful bill,” and the cost of gas and goods.

Graham opened by noting the debate fell exactly three months after her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, died unexpectedly. She framed the discussion around her family’s legacy and the state’s needs. Andrews, a pediatrician, countered by portraying Graham as an “empty suit” who would not stand up to Trump or his policies, calling Graham the “White House’s ambassador to South Carolina.”

The two candidates sparred over the ongoing war in Iran. Graham defended the administration’s approach, saying the conflict is necessary to protect U.S. interests. Andrews criticized the war, accusing Republicans of wanting to privatize Social Security so “Washington insiders” could profit, and argued that the conflict has drained resources that could help South Carolinians.

On artificial‑intelligence, Graham warned that AI data centers could increase energy costs for consumers, while Andrews suggested federal incentives to attract AI firms could create jobs without raising taxes.

Both candidates referenced Trump’s signature legislation. Graham defended the “one big, beautiful bill,” saying it lowered taxes on tips and Social Security, while Andrews dismissed it as a “one big, ugly bill” that benefits only the wealthy.

The debate also featured Libertarian candidate Kasie Whitener, who briefly addressed civil‑liberties issues before the focus returned to the two major party contenders. The winner of the race would become South Carolina’s first female senator, adding historic stakes to the heated exchange.
