Investec warns rising inflation could tighten South Africa’s 2026 outlook

Investec’s Q4 Global Investment View flags inflation pressures but points to fiscal improvements and structural reforms.

By Felo News Desk · Published

Investec’s latest Q4 Global Investment View says higher fuel prices are likely to push South Africa’s annual inflation above 5% by year‑end, raising the prospect of further interest‑rate hikes as the Reserve Bank seeks to curb price pressures.

The report also highlights stronger commodity export values – up 19% year‑on‑year in US‑dollar terms – which could lift tax revenue by roughly R80 billion above February forecasts. Chris Holdsworth, global chief investment officer at Investec Investment Management, said the fiscal boost supports a more constructive long‑term outlook and could help the country regain investment‑grade status within two years.

Holdsworth added that structural reforms, improved state‑owned enterprise performance and a surge in office‑building approvals (up more than 50% year‑on‑year) suggest conditions are emerging for a meaningful rise in construction activity.
