Caxton Media survey reveals South Africans’ food‑shopping habits in 2026
The second annual Project EAT study compares current eating and shopping behaviour with 2023 data.
By Felo News Desk · Published
Caxton Media’s Project EAT 2026 surveyed 3,000 South Africans over 30 consecutive days, capturing real‑time eating and food‑shopping behaviour, the outlet reported on 29 September.
The study, the second of its kind, measured how often respondents used delivery apps (7%), air‑fryers (5%) and microwaves (14%) for main meals, and noted that 76% experienced daily loadshedding. It also compared current habits with those recorded in 2023, when 66% of main meals on the first Saturday after payday were for social or special occasions.
Lynne Krog, head of research at Caxton Media, said the findings will be valuable for FMCG, quick‑service restaurant and takeaway brands, adding that people’s stated preferences often differ from actual purchasing decisions, which are also influenced by emotions and weather.
Caxton Media will present the results to clients from mid‑October, offering free briefings online or in person.
