Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan has publicly refuted reports that he will play in the World T20 Continent Cup, saying his name was added to the Asia Warriors squad without his consent.

What happened

The tournament organisers listed Dhawan alongside Pakistan’s Iftikhar Ahmed and Sohail Tanvir. Dhawan, who retired from all cricket in 2024, posted on X that he discovered his name in the squad announcement and that he had not authorised it.

What the reports add

Gulf News reported Dhawan’s statement and the subsequent organiser response, which cited “scheduling conflicts and certain technical considerations” as the reason for his absence. The statement thanked Dhawan for his past support but did not explain how his name was initially included.

What was said

“I have come across my name as a participant in the World T20 Continent Cup. My name has been used by the organisers without my knowledge or permission, and my team will be taking the appropriate legal steps to address this,” Dhawan wrote on X, Gulf News said.

“I request the media and my fans to not report or rely on any unauthorised announcements. Thank you for your continued love and support,” he added.

How it came about

Dhawan’s career includes 34 Tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is for India, highlighted by his role in the 2013 Champions Trophy win. After retiring, he has remained a public figure, prompting the organisers to initially promote his name as a marquee player for the upcoming competition.
