Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday that two Bangladeshi nationals, Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, were executed on Oct. 14 in the Makkah region for committing an indecent act inside a mosque.
The ministry said security forces apprehended the pair, investigations led to charges, and a competent court sentenced them to death under ta’zir, a discretionary punishment under Islamic law. The court’s ruling was upheld by a higher authority and a royal order was issued to carry out the sentence in accordance with Sharia.
In its statement, the ministry reiterated the government’s commitment to security, justice and the enforcement of Islamic law against violations of mosque sanctity.
