Nor'easter carves cliffs on Rockaway Beach, sand dumped at Breezy Point

The storm reshaped Jacob Riis Park and Beach 149th, leaving dangerous drop‑offs and a 14‑foot sand cliff.

A powerful nor'easter on Saturday ripped away large sections of Rockaway Beach in Queens, turning parts of Jacob Riis Park and Beach 149th into steep cliffs, the New York Post reported.

The storm’s waves created a 14‑foot‑tall sand cliff measured by the paper, while sand was carried several feet inland and deposited at nearby Breezy Point.

A Parks Department worker, who asked to remain anonymous, said the beach was "pretty much gone" and that the sand had been moved to Breezy Point, where residents were "really happy" about the extra sand.

Local surfer John Thuilot, 18, described feeling the sandbar disappear beneath his feet as the water surged, and resident Hazzard Ho, 32, noted the new stone jetty prevented the entire beach from being lost.
