Carlos Queiroz has stepped down as head coach of Ghana's national football team, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said on Thursday.

What happened

Queiroz, who was reappointed on 2 September, oversaw two AFCON 2027 qualifying defeats: a 2‑0 loss away to Ivory Coast and a 4‑2 home loss to Gambia, leaving Ghana bottom of Group C with no points.

What the reports add

Standard.co.uk noted that the defeats gave an aggregate score of 6‑2 across the two matches, while Al Jazeera detailed that Ghana surrendered a 2‑0 lead against Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, with Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena‑Gyan scoring before Gambia turned the game around.

What was said

“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” Queiroz said in a message published on the GFA website.

Both outlets quoted the same statement from Queiroz. The GFA confirmed the mutual termination in an open letter posted on its site.

How it came about

Queiroz first took charge of the Black Stars in April 2026 after Otto Addo was dismissed. He resigned later that month, was re‑appointed on 2 September, and then left less than a month later. Earlier this month Felo News reported on Ghana’s squad rotation ahead of the Gambia qualifier (see article), highlighting injuries to key players that contributed to the team’s struggles.
