Baltej Singh Pannu, the Aam Aadmi Party's media in‑charge for Punjab, told a press conference in Chandigarh on September 28 that Punjab Police did not employ batons or pellet guns against students during the unrest at Lovely Professional University (LPU). He said the situation was sensitive because it involved students from Punjab, other Indian states and abroad, and that the government’s priority was their safety.
The protest began early Sunday near the university's girls' hostel, leading to a highway blockade and vandalism. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been set up to probe the incident, and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has directed Director General of Police Gaurav to visit the campus.
Earlier this week, Felo News reported on the broader LPU unrest surrounding a separate rape allegation claim, noting that police had found no evidence to support the allegation and that the university denied the claim.Read more
