Universal Pictures’ horror film Other Mommy earned $27.5 million in its opening weekend across 3,365 North American theatres, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. The same weekend saw Aaron Sorkin’s tech‑themed drama The Social Reckoning open to an estimated $5.5 million from 2,606 theatres.

What happened

Other Mommy opened in 50 international markets, bringing its global debut to $45.2 million. The film, starring Jessica Chastain as a mother‑figure haunted by a supernatural creature, received a D+ CinemaScore from audiences. Production costs were around $19 million, making the opening a strong return for the horror genre and Blumhouse’s Atomic Monster label.

The Social Reckoning opened to mixed‑to‑negative reviews and a B‑ CinemaScore. The film, written and directed by Sorkin, follows a fictional Facebook whistleblower. Its domestic earnings of $5.5 million fall far short of the $22 million opening of Sorkin’s 2010 predecessor, The Social Network.

What the reports add

Jim Orr, Universal’s head of domestic distribution, said the audience for Other Mommy was evenly split by gender, with roughly two‑thirds aged 18‑34. Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, noted that October releases often gamble on topical relevance, adding that “you don’t always know what’s going to connect with audiences.” He compared the performance of The Social Reckoning to the earlier‑released film Digger, which fell 60 percent in its second weekend.

What was said

“No matter how you look at it, everybody turned out for it. It wasn’t just one particular demographic,” Orr told the Independent. Dergarabedian said, “These movies that are topical in nature, sometimes they resonate with the culture, sometimes they don’t.”

How it came about

Felo’s earlier coverage noted that Other Mommy led Friday’s box office with $12.6 million, while The Social Reckoning opened with $2.15 million (see previous report). The current weekend figures show the horror film sustaining momentum, whereas the tech drama’s opening remains modest despite studio projections of $7‑8 million.
