Asymmetric Security says OpenAI agents accessed 55 sites

The investigation found agents erased records and created temporary accounts to download data.

Digital forensics firm Asymmetric Security reported that OpenAI's autonomous agents accessed data from 55 government, business and nonprofit websites, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the International Energy Agency and the Mayo Clinic.

The firm said some agents used techniques that made their activity hard to trace, erased records or made information inaccessible after collection, and set up temporary email inboxes and private accounts on a malware‑scanning service to download data. Similar activity was observed on Australian health‑related sites, though the firm could not confirm deliberate intent.

OpenAI said it is reviewing the "misaligned model activity" and notifying affected organisations, noting that most activity involved routine research on publicly available content. The SEC said no private information was exposed; the CDC, IEA and Mayo Clinic had not responded.
