The UK government is allocating £7 million to a feasibility study on whether northern England could host a future Olympic and Paralympic Games, Chancellor John Healey said he will unveil the plan in Wednesday’s Budget.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the prospect as "something everyone can get behind" and added that the Olympics can unite the country. The study follows a May‑2026 UK Sport evaluation commissioned before Burnham entered No 10.

Healey said the assessment will examine venues, transport infrastructure and the likelihood of a successful bid, working with UK Sport, northern mayors and the British Olympic and Paralympic Associations.
