Venice Golden Lion winner Milcho Manchevski’s dark comedy Sister Brother Manhole Cover will world‑premiere in the main competition of the Tokyo International Film Festival, Variety reported.

What happened

The film, written and directed by Manchevski, follows siblings Malina and Viktor as they survive on the margins of Macedonian society by stealing bronze busts and manhole covers. Their scheme leads them to a blind, wealthy elderly woman who forces them to confront their morality.

What the reports add

Variety noted that Francesca Breccia’s Coccinelle Film Sales will handle the film and will begin courting international buyers at the Asian Contents & Film Market in Busan. The outlet also highlighted that Sara Klimoska and Filip Trajkovikj lead the cast, with Sonja Mihajlova in a supporting role and Jane Kortoshev producing.

What was said

“Our anti‑heroes defiantly refuse to identify as victims,” Manchevski said, Variety reported.
“I was interested in telling a story of great love and unconditional acceptance that is not erotic,” he added.

How it came about

Manchevski first gained worldwide attention with Before the Rain, which won the Golden Lion at Venice and earned an Oscar nomination. His later works include Dust, which opened Venice, and Kaymak, also premiered in Tokyo’s competition. The new film returns him to Tokyo after the earlier showing of Kaymak.
