Lionel Messi has been awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Buenos Aires, the institution’s highest honorary distinction, according to Gulf News.
The university’s Superior Council approved the award unanimously, citing Messi’s excellence, perseverance, humility and his role as an ambassador of Argentine culture. University head Ricardo Gelpi described Messi as an example of national identity.
Messi, 39, will receive the honorary doctorate on Oct. 6, the same day he is scheduled to play his 208th and final match for Argentina against Benin at the Monumental stadium.
Argentina Football Association president Claudio Tapia said the friendly was arranged to give Messi “the farewell he truly deserves.”
