Jaishankar says lack of empathy on terrorism hurts India‑US ties

Jaishankar warned that inadequate understanding of India's terrorism concerns and US tariff shifts are creating friction in bilateral ties.

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told a gathering at the Asia Society in New York on Tuesday that a lack of empathy over cross‑border terrorism and recent changes to US tariff policy are straining India‑US relations.

Jaishankar said terrorism, especially attacks originating from a neighbouring country, remains a core security concern for India and that insufficient appreciation of this issue by New Delhi's partners impacts bilateral ties. He added that while India and the United States have reached “more or less an understanding” on a trade agreement, the overturning of the earlier reciprocal‑tariff framework and the use of Section 301 for tariff actions have introduced new complications.

He noted that India’s Trade Minister Piyush Goyal will travel to the United States from September 29 to October 5 for further discussions on the proposed bilateral trade deal.
