Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Oct. 18 that the state will target 80‑85% doctor strength against its total requirement by next year.
What happened
Sukhu made the statement while inaugurating Blocks 1 and 2 of Phase IV of the Armsdale Building at the state secretariat, a project costing Rs 9 crore. He noted that doctor availability in the state’s medical colleges was just 35% four years ago and has now risen to over 70%.
What the reports add
The PTI‑fed news piece reports that postgraduate (PG) medical seats across Himachal’s six government medical colleges have increased from 277 to 597, an addition of 320 seats. Sukhu said the expansion of PG seats will give young doctors more opportunities for specialised training within the state and improve specialist availability in government hospitals.
What was said
"Doctor availability in the state’s medical colleges stood at just 35 per cent four years ago. We have increased the figure to over 70 per cent and aim to raise it further to 80‑85 per cent by next year," Sukhu told reporters, according to News18.
How it came about
The chief minister linked the target to broader efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, adopt modern technology, and reduce waiting periods for radiodiagnostic services to zero. He also mentioned a newly constituted commission to examine the reorganisation of administrative units for better public convenience.
