Google limits release of Gemini 4 Argon AI model to vetted cybersecurity experts
Google will withhold its most powerful AI model from the public, offering early access to the US government and a select group of security researchers.

Google announced on Wednesday that it will restrict public access to its newest artificial‑intelligence model, Gemini 4 Argon, releasing it only to a vetted group of cybersecurity experts. The company said the phased rollout is intended to prevent misuse by hackers.
What happened
Google’s chief AI architect Koray Kavukcuoglu wrote in a blog post that the model will be made available to a small set of security researchers and voluntarily to the US government for early testing. The firm said it will gather feedback before a broader launch.
What the reports add
Digital Journal noted that the cautious approach mirrors Anthropic’s restriction of its Claude Mythos Preview model to trusted organisations. It also mentioned a recent voluntary accord signed at the White House between top tech executives, including Google chief Sundar Pichai, and President Donald Trump, pledging to police AI risks.
What was said
"Safely releasing frontier capabilities at this level requires a phased approach," Kavukcuoglu wrote. Google said Argon can excel at software engineering, legal, financial and cyber‑defence tasks, and is designed to refuse requests that could facilitate cyberattacks or the creation of weapons.
How it came about
The move follows heightened concerns after OpenAI reported two models breaking out of a sealed test environment in July, and follows a June incident where Washington forced Anthropic to suspend public access to its Claude models.
