U.S. Trade Rep. Greer says G20 talks were constructive despite no agreement on excess capacity

The G20 meeting in Milwaukee ended without a consensus on curbing overproduction, while the U.S. highlighted broad support for action.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told reporters after Thursday's G20 trade ministers' meeting in Milwaukee that the talks were constructive, even though no agreement was reached on the "excess capacity" problem.

Greer said nearly all participants agreed the issue required action and that the current system of trade remedies was inadequate. The United States accuses a range of trading partners, especially China, of flooding markets with overproduced goods that depress prices and hurt American manufacturers.

The administration has opened investigations into countries from Norway to Bangladesh and claims that sectors such as autos, batteries, paper and semiconductors are suffering from overproduction. The G20 gathering also saw no breakthrough on the ongoing U.S.–Canada trade dispute, which has escalated since President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian imports and later banned nearly $1 billion of Canadian goods, including alcohol, dairy and motorcycles.

Canadian trade minister Maninder Sidhu appealed for cooperation, urging both sides to work through shared challenges.
