Thirteen people were sentenced on 30 September 2026 in Paris to prison terms of up to 10 years for their role in the November 2021 English Channel boat sinking that killed 31 migrants, most of them Iraqi Kurds, according to the Independent.

The court heard that the smugglers organised a small, overloaded boat equipped with a 40 CV outboard motor, launched around 10 p.m. local time. Four hours later the boat began to deflate, the motor stopped and the vessel drifted, leading to the deaths.

Emmanuel Daoud, representing victims’ families, said, “when it costs the lives of 31 people and the sea becomes a cemetery, there is a price, and the court said that the price they had to pay was justice and prison time,” as reported by the Independent.

Fourteen people had been on trial since 8 September; one was acquitted and two remain at large. An investigation into seven military personnel accused of failing to assist survivors continues.
