A sub‑adult, tuskless elephant attacked and killed 60‑year‑old Nagaraj on Mysuru Road in Bengaluru at about 5:10 a.m. on Monday, according to the New Indian Express.
Nagaraj was walking with his daughter near Rajarajeshwari Medical College when the lone elephant, suspected of having separated from its herd, entered the area, broke part of the college’s compound wall and struck the man.
Forest Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy visited the hospital where the post‑mortem was conducted, offered condolences and said the family would receive compensation of Rs 20 lakh plus a Rs 4,000 pension.
Reddy added that officials are using patrols and drones to locate the animal, which will be captured and sent to Dubare elephant camp or another facility. He noted this is the first such incident in the city in five‑to‑six years and that a meeting with forest officials will be held to strengthen wildlife corridors.
