China announced sanctions on Paraguay’s communications minister Gustavo Villate and Belize’s foreign minister Francis Fonseca on Monday, Oct. 12, citing their countries’ diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
What happened
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the sanctions took effect the same day. They include freezing the two ministers’ assets held in China and denying them entry visas to Hong Kong and Macau. Chinese organisations and individuals are also prohibited from conducting transactions or cooperation with the two officials.
What the reports add
News18 and the Independent both quoted the Chinese foreign ministry’s statement that the measures are meant to safeguard China’s “national sovereignty, security, and development interests” and to oppose “separatist acts seeking Taiwan independence.” Al Jazeera added that the sanctions also bar Chinese entities from any dealings with the ministers. All three outlets note that Paraguay and Belize are among the last 12 nations that still recognise Taiwan.
What was said
The Chinese foreign ministry said the actions are intended to protect China’s sovereignty and counter Taiwan‑independence moves, according to its website, as reported by Al Jazeera. News18 quoted the ministry’s wording that the sanctions are to “oppose separatist acts seeking Taiwan independence.” The Independent repeated the same phrasing.
How it came about
Beijing has intensified diplomatic pressure on Taiwan in recent years, switching several partners such as Nauru, Honduras and Nicaragua to its side. The sanctions follow a pattern of targeting the remaining allies of Taiwan, which also includes smaller states in Central America, the Caribbean, the South Pacific, Eswatini and the Vatican. Felo’s earlier coverage of Taiwan’s defence spending and U.S. arms sales (Taiwan says U.S. arms sales stay on track while $14 billion package remains on hold; Taiwan President Lai pledges record defence spending to deter war) provides context for the heightened tensions surrounding the island.
