Aleksander Ceferin told national association leaders in Berlin on Thursday that he will seek a fourth term as UEFA president, the Press Association understands. The vote is scheduled for next year’s UEFA Congress in Astana, Kazakhstan, and would run to 2031 if he wins.
Ceferin, first elected in 2016, said his candidacy is possible only after the 2024 Congress in Paris approved changes to term‑limit rules, a move opposed by the English FA. He added that he had decided six months ago to step down after his third term ends in 2027, but the rule change reopened the option.
He also called for FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign, echoing his long‑standing opposition to Infantino’s plan to involve private investors in the commercial arm of FIFA’s tournaments. Ceferin said UEFA has lost confidence in Infantino’s handling of the proposal and will look for an alternative candidate.
Former Tottenham defender Ramon Vega announced on Wednesday that he will challenge Infantino for the FIFA presidency, with the candidate deadline set for 18 November.
