Buttler says McCullum’s Test coaching exit could aid England’s World Cup bid

Buttler argues the split of coaching duties will let McCullum concentrate on ODI success as England prepare for the 2026 tournament.

England captain Jos Buttler told the For the Love of Cricket podcast that Brendon McCullum’s removal as Test coach in July could improve England’s chances at next winter’s Cricket World Cup in southern Africa.

Buttler noted that McCullum, now solely in charge of the white‑ball side, can devote all his attention to the ODI format, which England have used to record 11 wins and two defeats this summer, including series victories over India and Sri Lanka.

Buttler, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury and will miss the upcoming tri‑series in Pakistan, said the coaching split gives McCullum “more time and more focus” on the World Cup target.

He added that the ODI set‑up has struggled in recent years and that the summer’s results represent a “really good start”.
