Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes told reporters on Saturday that Cristiano Ronaldo will forever be the country's greatest football symbol, even after the 41‑year‑old withdrew from the squad earlier in the week.
Fernandes said he had spoken with Ronaldo and emphasized that “the most important thing is that, regardless of what happens, Cristiano Ronaldo will never cease to be the greatest symbol of our national team, of our football, and of the country.” He added that the nation should avoid division and respect all sides of the debate.
The striker, who left the camp after coach Jorge Jesus announced he would not start him against Denmark, missed Portugal’s 4‑2 win over Denmark and the 2‑1 victory over Norway. Jesus called Ronaldo a “symbol of Portugal” and said he would focus on the upcoming Norway match in Porto.
