Aldi poll finds one‑third of Britons argue over gravy consistency

Aldi’s survey of 2,000 people reveals heated debates over gravy, with generational and regional differences in taste.

Aldi’s poll of 2,000 Britons, published on 15 October 2026, found that 35 per cent of respondents have argued about gravy – its thickness, colour and preparation – with notable generational and regional splits.

What happened

The online survey asked participants about their favourite gravy style and how they use it. Overall, the national favourite was described as medium‑brown, medium‑thick beef gravy made from granules and served with roast beef. The poll estimated weekly gravy consumption at 11 million litres, enough to fill four Olympic‑size swimming pools.

What the reports add

Young people were the most passionate: 56 per cent of Gen‑Z respondents said they had a gravy‑related argument, compared with just 17 per cent of those over 65. Regional preferences varied – 37 per cent of Brighton residents favoured dark or very dark gravy, while Leicester respondents preferred a very light shade. Cambridge was noted for the thickest gravy, and Belfast had 6 per cent of voters who liked a water‑like consistency. In Sheffield, one in four wanted their plate completely covered in gravy, and 9 per cent said they liked their meals “swimming” in it.

What was said

Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer of Aldi UK, told the outlet, “With 13 million units sold each year, our sales prove just how essential gravy is to the nation’s meals.”

How it came about

The poll was conducted ahead of the traditional Sunday roast weekend, a time when many British families gather for a meal that often includes gravy. The findings echo earlier Felo coverage of British food trends, such as the popularity of autumn squash recipes and seasonal drinks.
