AI ROI Questions Drive SEO Manager Promotions
Studies from MIT and Harvard highlight the challenge of proving AI’s financial benefits in digital marketing.

Research from the MIT Technology Review and Harvard Business School suggests that SEO, paid‑media and digital‑marketing managers who can prove that AI pays for itself are most likely to be promoted to director roles. The MIT study estimates hyperscalers will spend about $750 billion on data centres this year, while AI revenue is projected at $150‑$200 billion. Harvard’s work, led by Suraj Srinivasan, argues that earnings must grow 2.7‑fold by 2030 to justify $1.1 trillion of AI spending through 2027, otherwise the build‑out would be “the largest misallocation of capital in history.”
Rotman’s survey of roughly 6,000 executives in four countries found that 90 % reported no productivity gain from AI over three years. Kevin Indig notes that for every 10 hours AI saves, companies often return about four hours to fix weak output, a phenomenon described as “AI workslop.”
