AFL integrity unit probes hospitalisations of Carlton players after weekend incident

Carlton says the two players are embarrassed, while the league examines possible breaches of competition rules.

The AFL integrity unit has opened an investigation into the circumstances that saw Carlton Blues players Lachie Cowan and Will Hayward taken to hospital in the early hours of Sunday, the club said on Wednesday.

What happened

Cowan, 21, was transported by ambulance to The Alfred Hospital after emergency services responded to an address in South Yarra at about 5:15 a.m. on Sunday. He was later discharged. Hayward was also hospitalised following a night out at his South Yarra home, though the club did not disclose the exact time of his admission. Both players have now been released.

What the reports add

The SMH report notes that the investigation follows allegations of illicit drug use at a gathering at Hayward’s home on Saturday night, but Carlton has not confirmed whether drugs were involved in either player’s medical treatment. The outlet also states that a third player was present at the Saturday night event, "but not in the same situation" as Cowan and Hayward.

What was said

Club senior coach Chris Davies told SMH, "It’s an AFL discussion at the moment and we’ll leave it there. The AFL are going through a process right now and ultimately, we’ll work with the AFL to get to the end of that." He added, "That’s the most important thing – they’re OK now, a little bit embarrassed, I guess, to put the club in this position." Davies said the club has been in discussions with the league over the past two or three days.

How it came about

The incident emerged as the AFL trade period was drawing to a close, adding pressure on Carlton amid broader scrutiny of player conduct in the league. The integrity unit’s involvement escalates the matter from an internal club issue to a league‑wide inquiry, potentially examining breaches of competition rules or policies.
